Obituary for Bernadette Teresa Krueger

Bernadette Krueger, age 82, passed away on December 29, 2017, after a brave 30 year struggle with Multiple Sclerosis. The second of five daughters who remained close their entire lives, Bern was born in Whitehouse, Ohio on May 10, 1935 to Helen and Felix Spillis. She was a proud member of the first graduating class of Anthony Wayne High School, after which she went to Defiance College on an academic scholarship. In 1953, her freshman year, she met Ron Krueger, who wasted little time in throwing her in the campus fountain (a traditional Defiance College prank). Bern and Ron were married in 1956. Over the years, they lived in a number of cities/states, but always returned to NW Ohio. For the past 17 years, they made their home in Liberty Center.
Bern went back to college after her youngest child was in school, eventually earning both Bachelors (BGSU) and Masters (UT) degrees in Education. She taught 3rd and 4th grade at Waterville Elementary School, and was the Teacher of the Year for the Anthony Wayne School District in 1993. Bern was a teacher to the core. Even after MS forced her into early retirement, she found other ways to fulfill her calling, working as a volunteer tutor and playing endless games of “School” with her grandchildren, who loved to please Grandma by completing the math, reading, and geography assignments she gave them during summer vacation.
When she was young, Bern dreamed of becoming an actress. She was active in community theatre for many years as a member of Waterville Playshop and other troupes, and was thrilled when her two of her granddaughters also became struck by the theatre bug.
Bern is survived by her husband of 61 years, Ron Krueger; children Mary (Steve), Russell (Sherry), Jane, and Joe (Danita); grandchildren Esther (Nate), Lee, Emily, Liz (Micah), Jake, Becky, Tori, Noah, Dalton and Serina; great-grandchildren Maggie and George; sisters Madalyn Kronk and Linda Radabaugh; and loyal canine companions Louie and Tony.
A memorial reception will be held at 2:30 p.m. on January 14th at St. Peter Lutheran Church, K-980 County Rd 17, Florida, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to Assistance Dogs of America or Hospice of Northwest Ohio. Snyder-Wesche-Hoening Funeral Home in Napoleon is assisting the family. .
