Obituary for Clarence “David” Smith Sr.

Clarence "David" Smith Sr., 72, of Fostoria, passed away on Thursday, November 22, 2018, at Blanchard Valley Hospital, in Findlay.

He was born June 6, 1946 in Fostoria, to G. Riley and Iola Hattie Mae (McBeth) Smith. He married Sarah Swartz on July 2, 1983 at Mason Chapel, in Findlay and she survives him.

He is also survived by children, Thomas (Crystal) Reed, of Illinois, Alex Lamar (Brandi) Smith, of Oak Harbor, Clarence David (Laura) Smith Jr. of Fostoria, Sheronda Radcliff, of North Carolina, Jamie Lee Smith of Fostoria, Jeremy Riley (Rachael) Smith of Fostoria, Jerrell DaVon Smith of Fostoria, and Alissa Ann Smith, of Findlay; three sisters, Doris (Arnold) Langley of Fostoria, Vicki Smith of Fostoria, and Genise ( Merle) Robinson of Findlay, and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Ruben Parks Sr., the Rev. Dolphus Smith, and Earl Smith; three sisters, Thelma Smith, Lucy Smith and Ann Doster; and one grandson, Diontae TaMar "Tae Tae" Smith.

After graduating from Fostoria High School in 1965, David went on to serve his country as a Sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corp, having served during the Vietnam Era, for which our nation is forever grateful.

He continued to serve on the Ohio State Highway Patrol, retiring in 1988. He also worked at American Standard for 11 years until the plant closed.

Also a servant of God, David was a member of Faith Chapel A.M.E., in Fostoria and attended Mason Chapel in Findlay. He loved church and gospel music and had a beautiful singing voice. He was protective, loved his family and always put them first. A loving grandpa, he never missed his grandkids’ games. A sports enthusiast himself, he was an "all Ohio" fan of the Cleveland Browns, Cleveland Indians and The Ohio State Buckeyes. David was the first African American Quarterback for the Fostoria Redmen.

Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. on Tuesday, November 27, 2018 at MANN-HARE-HOENING Funeral Home, 407 N. Countyline St., Fostoria. Funeral services will begin in the funeral home at 1 p.m., the Rev. Merle Robinson, presiding. Committal services and burial will follow in Fountain Cemetery, Fostoria, where the United Veterans of Fostoria will perform military honors.
