Obituary for Fern Baeder

Obituary written by Fern Baeder:

Fern Baeder was born on a farm, in rural Prairie Depot, Ohio (now Wayne) to Sage Whitman and Ada (Webb) Whitman on August 30, 1917. Her first grade of school and half of second grade was in a one room brick school built on land donated from her great grandparents – Mr. and Mrs. Henry Harmon. Miss Kerr, the teacher, taught all eight grades in all subjects. The room was heated by a pot belly stove. Grades one-four sat on one side and grades five-eight sat on the other. Back then only single women were hired as teachers. There was no running water of plumbing; no janitors or school buses. The parents were responsible to see that the children were in school. Our family lived across the road. During seasons needing heat, my Dad crossed the road to add fuel to keep the fires burning overnight. Fern graduated from Montgomery High School in Wayne Ohio in 1935.

Fern was employed by the Fostoria Screw Co. as a receptionist and telephone operator in the late 1930’s. Her siblings are Luluvene Yates, Lelah Belle Souder and brother, Clare Whitman. On June 21, 1941 she married Charles Robert (Bob) Baeder at Clyde, Ohio officiated by Bob’s cousin, a Presbyterian minister, Rev. Harry Griffiths. Fern resided in Cleveland for over fifty years and moved to Wadsworth, Ohio to be near relatives. She celebrated her 101st birthday on Aug. 30, 2018. Fern passed away on Tuesday, January 1, 2019 in Wadsworth, Ohio. She is survived by nieces and nephews.

Private graveside services will be held in Fountain Cemetery where Fern will be laid to rest.
