George Bradford Hathaway, age 89, of Toledo's Point Place Community, passed away Tuesday, April 16, 2019 at his residence. He was born December 9, 1929 in Bucyrus, OH to Arthur and Marie (Frakes) Hathaway.
George was a 1947 graduate of Lyons High School in Lyons, OH. He earned his bachelor's degree from Otterbein University in 1952 and his masters from the University of Toledo in 1961 where he was a member of the Phi Delta Kappa fraternity. He also earned a coveted State Farmers degree. George worked at North American Aviation in the evenings while he pursued his education. An athletic student, he was active in baseball, basketball, track, and cross country. He also became a Golden Gloves boxing champion. George married Betty (Salsberry) on September 5, 1953 and they enjoyed 60 years of marriage. He proudly served his country in the Marine Corps., earning the rank of 1st Lieutenant. Following family tradition, George began his career at Toledo Public Schools in 1958. He worked as a teacher, counselor, principal, and administrator, retiring after 29 years.
George is survived by his children, Dale (Linda) Hathaway, Brad Hathaway, Jed (Nancy) Hathaway, Vicki (Steve) Cannon, Brent (Marnie) Hathaway, J.J. Hathaway, and Susie (Randy) Powell; brother, David (Helen) Hathaway; sister in-law, Coretta Hathaway; sister, Anne (Rollie) King; and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife and brother, Harley Hathaway.
Family and friends may visit Thursday, April 18, 2019 from 12:30-1:30 p.m. at David R. Jasin-Hoening Funeral Home, 5300 N. Summit St. Toledo, OH, where a funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Interment will follow in Ottawa Hills Memorial Park.
Memorial donations may be given to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
