Obituary for "Betty" Mary Meyer

“Betty” Mary E. Meyer, 77, of Fostoria, passed away at 2:57pm Friday July 27, 2018 at Bridge Hospice Care Center, Findlay after a lengthy battle with liver disease.

She was born June 15, 1941 in Fostoria to the late Clyde and Oleva (Williams) Koch. She married Ronald L. Meyer on June 23, 1962 at St. Wendelin Catholic Church and he survives in Fostoria. Also surviving is a son, Jeff Meyer, Tucson, AZ; daughter, Kathy (Richard) Wilfong, Fostoria; two granddaughters, Michelle and Stephanie Wilfong; sister, Nancy Brown, Ashland; sister and brother in laws, Tom (Diane) Meyer, Fostoria, Tom (Pat) Norris, Hilliard; sister in law, Janet Meyer, Dublin; nephews, Mark Elchert Jr., Tiffin, Donnie (Karen) Elchert, Delaware, Rob (Karen) Norris, Greg (Kerry) Norris all of Hilliard and Shawn (Meg) Meyer, Columbus; nieces, Judy Ludlam, Ashland and Megan (Matt) Coppus, Fostoria; and great-nephews, Jacob, Logan, Max, Brian and Alex. She was also preceded in death by her father and mother in law, Louis and Florence Meyer; and sister in law, Nancy Meyer.

Betty was a 1959 graduate of St. Wendelin High School and member of St. Wendelin Catholic Church. She met her future husband Ron on a blind date set up by the mutual friends of the couple Helen and Jerry Arnold.

Betty worked in the Insurance Industry for over 40 years as a secretary. She worked for Lee B. Luckey and then State Farm Insurance, Fostoria under agents Steve Ward, Suzane Van Mooy and cherished friend Darnell (Kim) Cousin until her retirement. Betty retired in 1997 after the birth of her first granddaughter, Michelle to care for her, and then along came Stephanie a few years later. Betty cherished every minute with her granddaughters; they were her pride and joy. She attended every school performance, band concert and sporting event that they participated in. Needless to say they kept her very busy. Her biggest sorrow in knowing her death was near, was not seeing her granddaughter Stephanie graduate in May of 2019 from high school. Stephanie knows she’ll still see her but with much better view from above.

Betty was involved in many activities as she could never say no to anyone. She was a Red Hat Lady, 55 plus member, a past member of St. Wendelin Choir, involved in many card clubs and card flights. She organized quarterly luncheons for her St. Wendelin class of 1959 and was planning for their 60th class reunion next year until her health quickly deteriorated within the past few months.

In her spare time Betty enjoyed fishing at Indian Lake, crocheting, crafting, and playing euchre with longtime friends Vernon and Ruthann Gruble and spending time with family and friends.

Visitation is Wednesday August 1, 2018 from 2-4 & 6-8 pm at HOENING & SON FUNERAL HOME 133 W. Tiffin St., Fostoria, where a Christian Wake service will take place at 7:30 pm.

Mass of Christian Burial is 10:30 am Thursday at St. Wendelin Catholic Church with Rev. Todd Dominique presiding. Burial will follow in St. Wendelin Cemetery.

Her family would like to thank Dr. Masood for her many years of caring for her and her recent visit to Bridge Hospice Care which filled Betty’s heart with joy. Dr. Masood and Betty had a more than a doctor patient relationship with discussions of vacations, in particular a trip to Alaska and how the family is doing. Also, Dr Heacock, Dr. Ray, Dr. Iboaya, Dr. Cole, Blanchard Valley ER and Hospital, staff on floors 3,5,and 6 for their wonderful care during the last few months, Independence House, Good Shepherd Home and lastly Bridge Hospice Care. A special thanks to everyone who visited Betty during her declining health and for those who came in her final days. She was loved by many.

Memorials are suggested to Hopewell Loudon Music Boosters, Bridge Hospice Care and the Seneca County Humane Society c/o the funeral home.
